Activists installed a cross with pieces of coal in memory of those killed at local industrial enterprises in the city of Prokopyevsk. The monument remained there for less than a day: unknown people destroyed it. The Sibir.Realii Media Outlet reported that.

The monument was created by artist Vano Bogomaz from St. Petersburg, who was born in Novokuznetsk. Activists and local residents decided to install it on the Holy Week to honor the "memory of innocent victims."

According to the social activists, miners die in industries and no one remembers about them. In addition, the monument was dedicated to the victims of environmental problems in the region.

In 2016, a blog tour to Novokuznetsk was held with the support of the 7x7 Online Newspaper. It was dedicated to environmental problems from coal mining, which caused irreparable damage to human health and the environment.

Journalists found out that people living near opencast coal mines are really exposed to coal-dust, which leads to respiratory diseases and allergies. Mining waste contains heavy metals and other toxicants that can get into subsoil water and air. Another problem is radioactivity. Brown coal contains uranium, thorium and potassium-40. Local residents are more likely to suffer from tuberculosis and cancer.
