On July 20, the United Russia-controlled Yakutsk City Duma appointed Dmitry Sadovnikov, the first deputy chairman of the Republic of Sakha's government, as mayor of the city. Twenty-three of the 25 deputies voted in his favor.

Direct elections of municipal heads in the region were abolished in December 2025. The two mayoral candidates, Dmitry Sadovnikov and his opponent Vladislav Sozonov, the former head of Yakutskecoseti, were nominated by the republic's head, United Russia member Aysen Nikolayev.
The last directly elected mayor of Yakutsk was United Russia member Yevgeny Grigoryev. Deputies also accepted his resignation at the same session. Grigoryev had led the city since 2021, but he was not nominated for another term.
Initially, six candidates sought the post of mayor. However, the republic's head selected only Sadovnikov (nominated by United Russia) and Sozonov (nominated by the Republic's Council of Municipalities). Candidates nominated by A Just Russia, New People, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, and the Communist Party of the Russian Federation were eliminated from the selection process.
