Convicted of bribery, former deputy head of Khakassia goes from prison to war

Former deputy head of Khakassia, Sergey Novikov has been released from prison to go to the war in Ukraine. In 2021, Novikov was sentenced to a term in a strict regime penal colony for bribery. His current situation was reported by the 19rusinfo.ru publication on October 16.

In August, Sergey Novikov with a group of other inmates from an Abakan colony was sent to Ukraine. On October 11, near Makiivka, the former official sustained multiple shrapnel wounds to his legs and was taken to the hospital.

In 2021, the former deputy head of Khakassia was sentenced to a nine-year prison term. He was found guilty of receiving a bribe from a contractor. In prison, Novikov worked as a foreman of a crew producing landscape stones for export to Europe.


According to the "Sirena" publication, at least 15 convicted or criminally charged officials have attempted to go to war in Ukraine.

For example, in May, a former deputy governor of Vladimir, Dmitry Khvostov, who was serving time for bribery, chose to join fighting troops. Two former officials lost their lives in Ukraine in June, and both of them had been sentenced for corruption. It is a former deputy mayor of Aramil in the Sverdlovsk region, Alexander Melnikov, and the former head of the Krasnoyarsk Center for the Implementation of Social Projects, Maxim Barkhatov.
