Employees of the Mariinsky mine, known for its extraction of emeralds and beryllium, have refused to leave their workplace. They protest against the possible closure of the company. This event was conveyed by a Telegram channel associated with the Sverdlovsk region governor, on June 8th.
Approximately 80 miners at the Mariinsky mine, known for its extraction of emeralds and beryllium, have chosen not to return to the surface. This collective decision was spurred by rumors surrounding the potential closure of the enterprise.
On June 8th, a Telegram channel controlled by the Sverdlovsk government reported that Rostec, the entity in ownership of the mine, refuted claims of layoffs. A representative from the regional government arrived for negotiations with the workers. The state corporation insists that any acts of “sabotage within the workplace would be met with severe consequences.”
According to statements provided by Rostec to 66.RU, several activists have managed to capture the collective's attention, inciting the strike and refusing to vacate the mine. They are discontented with the mine's proposed development plans, which entail mothballing operations, transitioning to open-pit mining, constructing a flotation plant, and, overall, striving for a "financially viable position."
In May 2023, workers at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant brought the main conveyor to a halt. The authorities reacted by taking seven strikers to the police under suspicion of sabotaging a defense order. Also in May, a worker at Uralvagonzavod protested against low wages by stabbing himself in the throat in the presence of his superiors. His income had dropped from 110 thousand rubles ($1,330) to 11 thousand rubles ($133) a month within a short span of time.
