Mari State University has expelled third-year student Viktor Novogorski because of his failure to pass a test. According to the Mari Ushem organization, the true reasons for expelling the student were political ones. Novogorski has participated in actions in support of the rights of the Mari people, activists reported on March 22.

Mari State University explains the expulsion of student Viktor Novogorski to his academic failure. However, Mari Ushem says that he is a strait-A student. The true reason for expelling him was likely his membership in Mari Ushem, an organization that is a vocal defender of the rights of the Mari people.

The student, along with community activists, stood up for Person and Law, a Mari human rights organization, which is currently under threat of closing by a request from the Ministry of Justice. Novogorski was officially warned about the legal consequences of his participation in an action in memory of the Mari people who fought in the Cheremis war. He took part in a rite of passage calling for peace.

The expulsion could be related to the student's posts on VKontakte where he discussed protest actions and the situation of the Mari people. Mari Ushem called on the head of Mari El and the Ministry of Education to restore the student to the university.

Ethnic minorities in Russia often have to deal with xenophobia and discrimination. Their support on the part of authorities is limited mainly to cultural and mass events, while ethnically colored activism is met with pressure and resistance.
