People in Poltavskaya, including wheelchair user Yuri Trubachov, have been picketing against the landfill since 2022. They blocked the road in protest before. The locals believe that the landfill is the source of contamination for the water and commercial rice fields. Those violations have been pointed out by the prosecutor's office.
Protests had pushed the district administration to try to end the lease agreement with the owner of the landfill by using legal channels. The place was allegedly owned by the family of the head of the Krasnoarmeisky district, Yuri Vasin, who later sold it. However, the court found no violations of the agreement and rejected the demand for ending it. The prosecutor's office had also spoken in favor of preserving the landfill.
