Oleg Khorokhordin announced his decision to step down from his position as the head of the Altai Republic via his Telegram channel on June 8. Previously, participants in the war in Ukraine had demanded his resignation.

In his Telegram post, Oleg Khorokhordin mentioned that he would be transferred to a new position but refrained from disclosing further details. His 5-year gubernatorial term was set to expire this year.

Andrey Turchak, the Secretary of the United Russia’s General Council and former head of Pskov Oblast, has been appointed as the acting governor of the Altai Republic.

A week ago, a video message from participants in the war in Ukraine emerged online. They demanded Khorokhordin’s resignation due to 'impossibility of receiving basic medical services' in the republic, challenges related to subsidiary farming and public transportation, and land distribution to investors.

On May 30, just days before Khorokhordin’s resignation, a building labeled as 'Putin’s country house' burned down in the Altai Republic.

In 2019, Putin appointed Khorokhordin as the acting governor of the Altai Republic, where he secured 58.82% of the votes in the elections. Back in 2021, citizens had already called for the governor’s resignation after his sluggish speech in Mayma. Reports from 'Baza' suggested that Khorokhordin had been hospitalized in 2020 due to drinking problems. However, Khorokhordin’s press office attributed the odd speech to the official’s 'fatigue from a busy schedule.'
