A bill banning employers from firing widows of war in Ukraine has been submitted to the State Duma for consideration. On September 15, the document appeared on the website of the Russian parliament.

The initiative comes from Duma member Igor Antropenko and Senator Dmitriy Perminov. The lawmakers propose to prohibit employers from terminating labor contracts with widows of those who have lost their lives in Ukraine unless the woman remarries within a year.

According to the lawmakers, the new law "will contribute to social stability, protection of children's rights, and normalization of family life after the loss of a breadwinner."

Earlier, Buryatia authorities had raised concerns over the labor rights of wives and widows of the servicemen deployed in Ukraine. The working hours of the women with preschool children had been shortened. The decision was motivated by the need to "strengthen the institution of the family".

In other regions, female relatives of the military can apply for lumpsome payments and rehabilitation programs. In the Tula region, the authorities had paid 8 thousand rubles ($83) to wives and widows of war veterans by March 8. In Penza, public activists had launched a rehabilitation program for mothers and wives of fallen soldiers that includes prayers and makeup master classes.
