The Akhmat battalion from Chechnya is set to be deployed to the border of the Belgorod region with the objective of “thwarting sabotage attacks.” Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, made this announcement on June 13th.
The Akhmat battalion from Chechnya is to be dispatched to the border of the Belgorod region with the purpose of preventing sabotage attacks. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov emphasized that the presence of Akhmat will “significantly bolster security” in the border areas, requiring “minimal effort.”
The Chechen battalion will be guarding the border in collaboration with other military groups, as discussed during a meeting on May 13 between Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov and Adam Delimkhanov, a member of State Duma from Chechnya. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense and Rosgvardia were also present at the discussions.
Previously, the mother of a conscript stationed in the primary defense line at the Belgorod border told 7x7 about the possible deployment of Chechen troops to the region. She was promised at her son's military unit that Chechens or Wagner mercenaries would replace the conscripts in June.
On May 22, saboteurs conducted their first raid into the Belgorod region. The Russian Legion of Freedom and the Russian Volunteer Corps units stayed for approximately 24 hours in the border town of Graivoron. Pro-government political analyst Roman Romanov and war correspondent Alexander Kots reported the presence of conscripts at the border checkpoint.
Conscripts perform border surveillance duties in several regions. Since September 2022, they have been deployed in large numbers to dig trenches and construct dugouts. Several conscripts were wounded and killed by shelling. Female relatives of conscripts revealed to 7x7 that young soldiers are stationed in the first line of defense, closest to the border, before the mobilized and contracted servicemen.
During a meeting with pro-government war correspondents on June 13, Vladimir Putin claimed that none of the conscripts “flinched” while repelling the saboteurs’ attack in the Belgorod Region.
