An employee of Uralvagonzavod tried to commit suicide in front of his superiors, protesting against low wages. His salary dropped from 110 thousand rubles ($1,374) to 11 thousand rubles ($137) in a month. This was reported by E1.ru on May 24.

The man claims that his income in April was merely a tenth of his usual payment. According to E1.ru, this reduction was due to his relocation to a new workplace, after his former team headed by the factory's union leader had been disbanded. One worker claimed that the management had consistently exerted pressure on this crew.

Upon being transferred, the man was not provided with any training or a mentor. In response to his requests for assistance, his superiors supposedly suggested that he resign from his position. Consequently, the man's earnings in April amounted to 11 thousand rubles, while his previous monthly income was 110 thousand rubles.

The man inflicted cuts on his throat with a utility knife and was promptly hospitalized. The victim appealed to Alexander Bastrykin, the Head of the Investigative Committee, urging him to initiate a criminal case on charges of incitement to suicide.

The management of the plant refuted any association between the occurrence and their production process. Uralvagonzavod attributed the incident to the victim's alleged lack of education and qualifications explaining his suicide attempt by the man’s loan debts. They claimed that the employee had received all his due payments but had been on sick leave for most of April.

In May, employees at UAZ in the Ulyanovsk region halted the main conveyor belt protesting their low wages. As reported by Baza, the workers received approximately 20,000 rubles ($250) in the previous month. In a collective letter addressed to UAZ's General Director, Alexei Spirin, they demanded a wage of 110 rubles per hour ($1.38). However, the plant's administration denies the occurrence of a strike.

The police have conducted interviews with seven protesters as well as the management team of the plant.
