Politician Yulia Galyamina has decided to challenge in court her dismissal from the Institute of Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. By law, she as a foreign agent cannot work as a teacher at a public university. Galyamina reported filing a lawsuit on her Telegram channel.
Politician Yulia Galyamina filed a lawsuit against the Institute of Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration on February 22. In January 2023, she was dismissed from her position as an associate professor at the department of the theory and practice of media communications. Bt the law on foreign agents, she cannot teach at public institutions. Galyamina wants the court to rule her dismissal illegal.
"<...> As the first faculty member to be affected by the new law, I just have to challenge it in the Constitutional Court! Pointless, you say? I'll answer with a joke: to win a million in the lottery, you have to at least buy a lottery ticket," the politician said.
Galyamina, who is also a municipal council member, was included on the foreign agents list on September 2, 2022.
On December 1, a new version of the law on foreign agents entered into force. Instead of four categories, the Ministry of Justice created a single list, which originally included 493 individuals and organizations. Foreign agents are not allowed to work in public institutions, teach, have access to state secrets, or organize public events, which practically excludes them from key aspects of public life.
