A rally against the construction of landfill at station Shies in Arkhangelsk Oblast and for the expansion of social guarantees in Komi was held in the Michurinsky Park of Syktyvkar on November 4. It was organized by the regional office of the LDPR. The action gathered about 100 people, reported the correspondent of 7x7.
Six police officers and a woman in plainclothes with a camera watched the rally. Acting coordinator of the regional branch of the LDPR Roman Narab recalled that the deputies from the "certain party" had brought in a law draft, which allows import of waste from other regions to the Republic, to the State Council. According to him, this would create "another Shies", but in the Komi Republic. Activists opposed such norms.
— We collected more than 3000 signatures which we are going to carry to the State Council and really to say that inhabitants of Komi do not want someone's waste to be imported to our land, - Roman Narab told.
According to him, the LDPR suggested that the State Council should ask the Federal government for 100 billion rubles by the centenary of the Komi Republic to improve the "social sphere". This is the amount the region pays in taxes annually, Narab estimated.
After him, two activists, who had been to the construction site of landfill at station Shies, had the floor. They spoke about the conflict with private security guards on August 6. On that day, activists from the Kostyor (‘Bonfire’) guard post stopped a truck with cans moving towards the construction site. Security guards came to help the driver.
— About 60 security guards opposed us, 20 activists. The police did nothing, they were sitting in the MAZ and watching as they were beating our boys with their feet and hands. That day, there were 11 victims, one got to intensive care. One girl, because of her camera, because she was recording a video, was flooded in a puddle. You know, when this lawlessness ended, and it lasted from 9 AM to 3 PM, security guards brazenly and proudly walked in front of us, women and men, as they managed to win. I urge everyone to come to Shies defenders because today each of us is a huge power that can say no to Moscow garbage, - one of the young women said.
Activists urged to support the protest with "likes, reposts, and pickets". Representatives of the LDPR party invited participants to come to rally against the construction at Shies on November 9.
The Deputy of the State Council of the Republic from the LDPR Galina Nagaeva read the resolution of the rally. It included demands to the Head of the Republic Sergey Gaplikov and the State Council of Komi to exclude the law «On some issues of waste management» from consideration, legislatively prohibit the import of garbage from other regions, to stop the landfill construction at station Shies in Arkhangelsk Oblsat, to recognize any families with children, not only the low-income ones, as recipients of social support.
At the end of July 2018, residents of Arkhangelsk Oblast learned about the beginning of the construction of landfill for Moscow and Moscow Oblast garbage at station Shies in Lensky district. Residents of the region and the neighboring Komi Republic united against the dump.
Since December 2018, they have organized a watch at the station to record violations. There were several clashes with the security guards of the Security Guarantor Company and the police. Eco-activists tried to speak to President Vladimir Putin during the direct line, that is why several hundred people came to Shies, but no one connected them with the Head of the state.
